MTV Music Generator

It was the early 2000s and I was enjoying my Super NES and PSone during my summer break from high school. Games were being cycled through that included Killer Instinct, TMNT Turtles in Time, Yoshi's Island, X-Men, Tekken 2, Tekken 3, Namco Museum, Soul Blade, Gran Turismo 2, Twisted Metal 3, Need for Speed and Digimon Rumble Arena. I was just having a ball and like clockwork, game sharing time came again.

A friend came over with this huge stash of game discs for us to browse through for weekly game night. We found a good game that had multiplayer mode and as always someone would cry fowl when their character gets booted out of the fighting ring. Before leaving I was granted with a game to borrow for the week.

While browsing through the discs I came across this one in particular that seemed interesting and worth trying out.

Adventures with Music Generators

At this time, music generation software was new to me; this wasn't introduced fully till around 2006. I know this was a game and not a software per se but it was the first thing that came to mind. I've always been fond of music and this pretty much nursed along in a fun experimental kind of way.

The music demos were explored and quickly followed by my attempts at generating music. It was okay but things didn't flow well. Some more trials were taken and the composition improved, more or less, and some decent sounding pieces were produced.

A hunt began some time later to explore software that could emulate what was experienced with MTV Music Generator but they were far out of reach. Some classes were taken in college that involved music generating software but those sessions were merely for projects that weren't necessarily music heavy. The closest I've come to finding a generator to date is through the Audio Tool website.

Its a far cry from what I have become accustomed to in terms of composing pieces of music be it for loops or what have you. That said, it is still a nice tool for experimenting with your inner maestro.

Still Hunting

Wanting this more than ever, a nice music generating or even composing software. Wouldn't mind having a current or even past installment of the MTV Music Generator Game  but you can't have everything at once.

A Sampling of What Can Be

This is what some maestros have composed using the MTV Music Generator games. Piece and video by 00Gowron00 .
