Army Men: Green Rogue (PlayStation)

I've heard a lot of talk about the Army Men games and even used them as part my mock employment history; the teacher said make something up so I did. The closes I came to seeing gameplay was through the Sarge's Heroes trailer. Come to think of it, none of the Army Men games were on radar till a chance opportunity arose.

During a game exchange session, I had the choice to exchange a game but was also offered two additional game discs of my choosing. You've heard about Bushido Blade, JamPak and Crash Bash in past posts. Bushido Blade was exchanged for the above along with Army Men: Green Rogue.

The Ultimate Super Soldier

In the intro, we're introduced to two army men-like figures having a conversation; one of them was a scientist of some kind. The talk focused on creating a new super soldier based on the traits and abilities of the core Green Army group tagged as Sarge's heroes. There was warning of the group being out of commission once the procedure is complete, but there was some optimism for the new recruit to fill in till they recovered.

Not entirely sure of the in betweens, but do recall them loading the subject, still in the case at this point, onto a helicopter to be escorted somewhere. Despite the escort, the choppers were taken out by Tan Army artillery. There didn't look to be any survivors, but the test subject made it out unscathed and proceeded to kick their way out of the case.

He had a brief identity crisis before shifting gears into battle ready mode. After collecting some items and suiting up, the screen fades and we're taken to the first scene.

Gameplay Experience

I was nervous and excited during my first session. It was interesting to say the least and it took a while to get use to the mechanics. One of the frustrations early on was the slow firing of the main weapon.

This was remedied after collecting the power-up which enabled rapid fire mode. You would think the power ups for the main would improve but... Well, with the third power-up you get to take out three targets; however, the firing speed is reduced for whatever reason.

Other weapons included the grenade, flame thrower and rocket launcher. These three were my friends but I loved that rocket launcher and flame thrower more. There were some challenging moments here and there but was able to make it through all stages of the game.

The final boss was a pain but after some relentless retries I managed to defeat them. Of course after this we get the end scene where the head Green Army guy and Sarge show up to survey the damage. They didn't think anybody survived but to their surprise the Rogue came out on top.

Mission accomplished.
