Game App Review: Unscrew Family - Android

Downloaded the game from an offer wall on April 20th. From then to now, I'm currently at Level 437 and am making my way to Level 500 (next milestone reward). Been trying to play daily as to reach all stated milestones before the deadline which is 18-days away.

Game Experience: Then and Now

Unscrew Family Android App Game Screen Level 437

Level at end of
gaming session.
When I started playing a couple of months ago, the gameplay was pretty simple. You're given an abstract image from which to collect colored screws from. The screws are collected into one of the two unlocked 3-slot colored bins.

For example, if you're given a yellow and blue bin your collected blue and yellow screws will go here. If you collect a pink screw, then it will go into one of the reserve slots for later collection. Slots are limited so you have to be careful not to collect too many non-targeted colored screws.

The won't end but if you catch the issue early you'll be able to use of the boost tools: Drill, Hammer and Magnet. Otherwise the game will default to prompting you to add another bin. The boost tools can be earned thru daily check-ins via watching ads or from earning thru in-game events.

The other option is to purchase them via coins while playing a level you're stuck on; the same option applies to bins. If you're short on coins, you can watch an ad to earn said item. I like that there are options but there was an event that I tried to avoid as much as possible and that was the flower collecting one.

Before the update, you had to be mindful of the overall game screen and try to collect each flower as they appeared. This game mode/event alone resulted in the exhausting of boosts as well as patience. After the update, the flower collecting became more tolerable and less of a headache.

Other Bonus Features

There is a coin gift for checking in periodically plus a chance to get boost items and extra coins. A spin wheel is available that grants a free spin every 24-hours and a streak mechanism that grants gifts after reaching play time milestones.

Also, there's decorating involved. Yes, I said decorating. However, in order to decorate you have to earn stars from finishing rounds and using said stars to purchase items for decorating a given scene. The decorating aspect is nice, but you will eventually hit a snag when you run out of stars to finish up a scene. Or slightly worse, as I've experienced, running out of scenes to decorate.

It wasn't until earlier this month that I got a couple of new scenes to decorate. Haven't switched over to the new scene yet but at least I know there's another one at the ready.

The Verdict

A surprisingly engaging game that is straightforward without game hindering extras. Yes there are ads but they are varied. Majority of the ones I've encountered are 5-seconds. On the off occasion I will get consecutive ads like the 1 of 3 variety.

Unfortunately, there are times when I will encounter ads that do auto-redirects to the Play Store (fortunately these are few). Outside of those things, the game is playable. Though - on a side note - there are ads that play after each level regardless if you click the 10-coin button or the bonus coins button. Based on this, you're better off clicking on the bonus coins and watching the ad as opposed to clicking the basic 10 and getting an ad.

UPDATE: July 6th/7th

Managed to complete all tasks for the offer wall with the final milestone level being 500. A first in a long while.
